    An early 20th century Hebridean watercolour landscape titled ‘Barra’, titled, signed & dated 1935 bottom left.

    Dimensions, (sight) 11.25” h x 19.5” w (framed) 20” h x 28.5”w.

     

    In the 1920s and 1930s the artist made several visits to Castlebay on the island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. He exhibited at the RA (Royal Academy), RBA (Royal British Academy), SWE (Society of Wood Engraver) & NEAC (New English Art Club). He also had one-man exhibitions at Reid and Lefevre (later Lefevre Galley, London). In the 1930s Bliss taught at Hornsey and Blackheath Schools of Art, just after World War II – during which he served in the Royal Air Force – at Harrow School of Art, then from 1946–64 was the influential director of Glasgow School of Art.

    He was married to the noted British portrait painter, Phyllis Dodd (1899-1995) and lived mainly in Glasgow.
