George Francis White (1808-1898) was a Lt. Colonel in the British army, stationed in India serving in the 13th Regiment of Foot, from 1825-1846. He was a draughtsman & amateur artist, author and illustrator. Some of White’s graphite drawings were worked up and engraved for ‘Views in India, Chiefly Among the Himalaya Mountains’ taken during the tours in the direction of Mussoorie, Simla, the sources of the Jumna and Ganges in 1829, London, 1836. Other British artists such as J.M.W Turner, Cottman, Copley-Fielding, Cox, Samuel Prout, and others, also worked up his graphite drawings as finished watercolours. Examples of his works are in the permanent collection of the Tate Gallery, London.
