An Exceptionally Fine 18th C. Dutch Colonial Padauk Writing Box, Sri Lanka or China, Circa 1750

 

The exceptionally fine curvilinear carved base & conforming lid are embellished with finely engraved paktong mounts, bail-handles & backplates. The underside of the lid is fitted with a hinged padauk panel concealing a full-sized document compartment, the base’s interior houses a removable tray with a hinged writing panel, together with it’s original paktong mounted glass inkwell & pounce pot. The original & functioning lock mechanism is replete with an associated key.
A truly exceptional example, constructed of finely grained & highly figured solid timbers, exhibiting a fine old surface and a lustrous patina overall.
Closed dimensions, 5” high x 18.5” wide x 11.5” deep.

(As of July 2026), both Asian and Burmese padauk (Pterocarpus macrocarpus and Pterocarpus indicus) are not currently listed on the main CITES Appendices, however it is strongly advised to check with your local governments import policies before purchasing).
