An Exceptional Pair of Chaozhou Carved Giltwood Panels, China, Circa 1900

  • An Exceptional Pair of Chaozhou Carved Giltwood Panels, China Circa 1900

An exceptionally fine & large pair of Chinese hand carved & gilded wood panels, both showing finely executed relief-carved & gilded vignettes depicting scholarly figures standing beneath ‘moon gate’ structures, nobles on horseback & Manchurian swordsmen - all surrounded by pine boughs set against an intricate hand carved field of repeating geometric cell motifs. Both panels are mounted within red stained rustic wooden frames exhibiting overall surface wear.

Both carved panels remain in very good overall condition with a few minor losses and some areas of rubbing to the gilding, one bowing slightly from within its frame.

One frame measures 39.25" high x 16" wide, the other frame measuring 38.25 " high x 16" wide.

(Chaozhou is a city located in the Eastern Guangdong province of China, well known for its highly skilled carvers who have been producing some of the finest traditional woodcarvings in China since the Tang Dynasty).
