  • An 18th / 19th Century Carved Goan Figure of Santana Mestra (Saint Anne) Circa 1800

    The hand carved ivory figure of Saint Anne, shown wearing a belted robe and a veil covering her head, her hands supporting a book meant to receive a dowelled religious element, likely the figure of The Christ Child or the Orb of Sovereignty. Exhibiting traces of original red polychrome paint & gilded highlights. Height, 5”.

    (Saint Anne is often illustrated together with her daughter Mary - The Holy Virgin, seated beside her while teaching her to read, in some instances together with The Christ Child).

    Saint Anne is recognized as the Patron Saint for women in labour.
