Street’ for British Royal Navy Captain, Benjamin Street.
Purchased by Ernest Johnson Antiques from the descendants of Captain Benjamin Street.
Benjamin Street (1774-1838) was a 19th century British Royal Navy Captain who rose to the rank of Commander and served in the Napoleonic Wars aboard HMS Staunch. He immigrated to Canada in 1820 and settled in March Township, now a part of Ottawa. His great grand-daughter, Ida Mary Street (1870-1957) married Frederick August Heney (1869-1946). Frederick August Heney owned substantial real estate in the Nepean and Ottawa area and was President of Mortimer’s publishers, he was also a high-ranking Mason who helped establish the Temple on Churchill Avenue, he was the Reeve of Nepean Township, Warden of Carleton County, Chairman of the Ottawa Suburban Roads Commission, and President of the Ottawa Board of Trade. Kirkwood Avenue was called Heney Avenue until 1941.
The 33-room Heney family mansion which was built in 1898-1899 once occupied a considerable portion of the grounds where the Canadian Bank Note Company stands today.
