  • A Very Handsome Napoleon III Gilt Bronze & ‘Verdi Alpi’ Marble Inkstand, France Circa 1870

     

    The crescent shaped & dished ‘verdi alpi’ marble base mounted with a pair of lidded gilt bronze inkpots (glass wells absent) decorated with engine turned detail, centred by a marble column terminating to an eagle finial perched atop an orb. The eagle is shown with its head turned to the right and the wings slightly unfurled, its talons clutching Jupiter’s thunderbolts.

    Dimensions, 6” high x w 9.5” wide x 5” deep.

     

    This particular eagle emblem is based on a design by Antoine-Denis Chaudet (1763-1810) and was adopted by Napoleon’s triumphant Grande Armee during the 1st Empire Period (1804-1815).
