A Very Good Gilt Patinated Bronze of The Dancing Faun of Pompeii, Italy
A Very Good Gilt Patinated Bronze of The Dancing Faun of Pompeii, Italy Circa 1850
A finely cast & gilt patinated Grand Tour style bronze of The Dancing Faun of Pompeii, demonstrating fine proportions & well defined chiselled features, exhibiting an old untouched surface and a subtle gilt patina overall. In very good overall condition with no apparent repairs, an old stress separation to the right arm but remains in very stable condition. It may be that the fig leaf was applied later in order to appease the sensitivities of late Victorian morality. The mounting screws on the underside of the base also appear to be somewhat later. Height, 11.25”.
The original bronze dates from approximately the 2nd century and was discovered during the 1830 excavation of the ruins of a prominent residence in Pompeii, which has since come be known as The House of The Dancing Faun.
The accommodating scale of this fine classical bronze would serve as a wonderful desk accessory or accent piece in a library setting or in a bookshelf.
