    A Superior Early 19th Century Brass Bound Mahogany Campaign Writing Box. English, Circa 1820


    The richly figured Honduran mahogany case bound by bands of brass strapwork, opening to an interior fitted with a gilt-tooled leather writing surface, original matched pair of glass inkwells, pen tray, two hinged stationary compartments – one locking, the other fitted with a detachable lectern bar that affixes to the top’s exterior surface when raised on a flush mounted & ratcheted brass support, together with a series of complicated pressure activated ‘secret compartments’. The top’s exterior showing a rectangular brass nameplate bearing the initials B.E.M in old script, the front fitted with a brass escutcheon fronting the original locking mechanism (keys intact), the sides fitted with flush-mounted carrying handles.
    Dimensions: 7.5" high x 20" wide x 11" deep
