  • A Monumental Copper Alloy Head of Buddha, Thailand (Possibly 16th Century or Earlier)

     

    An exceptionally large & finely cast bronze head of Buddha Shakyamuni, demonstrating distinctive Northern Sukhothai features, specifically an oval shaped head with a pronounced ushnisha ascending to a flame-shaped finial, the face effecting a benign meditative expression with downcast recessed eyes and arched eyebrows, the beaked nose over full upturned lips and broad philtrum. The collar of the neck terminating to castellated appendages indicating it was once joined to a torso.

    Exhibiting an old surface & fine patina overall, with areas of loss & perforations as illustrated.

    Mounted atop a later ebonized wooden base. Height, 22”, overall height with base, 27”.
