A Large 19th Century Hand Painted ‘Rosemaling’ Folk Art Panel, Norway Circa 1850
A large & highly decorative hand painted Rosemaling wood panel - most likely used as a fire-board, decorated in a hand painted palette of primary and secondary colours of green, yellow & red on hand-hewn planks within a pegged mortise & tenon joined frame. The upper section depicting a large stylized golden bird - its wings and tail-feathers outstretched, surrounded by organic motifs of flora and scrolling vines set against a celadon green field. The original, untouched painted surface beneath an old (peeling) varnish finish, exhibiting even wear overall consistent with its age, use and materials. The reverse affixed with two iron rings that allow for either wall mounting or for suspending from above.
    Dimensions, 55.5” high x 51.5” wide x 1.5” deep.
(Rosemaling is a traditional form of Norwegian folk art decoration). (Fire-boards or chimney-boards as they were sometimes known, were used to cover a hearth during the warm summer months).
