A Finely Executed 19th Century Orientalist Portrait

Oil on canvas, measuring 23.5” x 19.5”, set within a period gilt gesso frame, re-lined, unsigned.

A highly expressive view of a Turkish Sultan protecting a young beauty – probably his concubine, against an opposing force which the artist has selectively set out of view and upwards to the right, the girl with her arms clasped about her chest, he with his gaze fixed in the direction of the threat, his right arm protectively encircles her waist, the left hand grasping a richly jewelled blade handle.
