  • A 19th Century Painted Pine step Back Cupboard, Eastern Canada Circa 1820

     

    In two parts using pegged construction & hand forged nails, the superstructure showing a cavetto shaped cornice above a pair of panelled doors fronting a shelved interior, overtop a pair of candle drawers decorated with beaded fronts, flanking an arched & recessed pie shelf.

    The base fitted with a pair of panelled cupboard doors fronting a shelved interior and raised overall on carved bracket shaped supports. Both pairs of cupboard doors showing mortise & tenon construction secured with pegged joinery and retaining their original hand forged iron latches.

    The old abraded greenish / grey painted surface over an earlier coat of pale yellow, with traces of original robin’s egg blue paint beneath.

    Dimensions, 92” high x 58” wide x 22” deep.

    Purchased directly from a decades old private collection, in ‘as found’ condition, surface wear & minor losses noted as observed.
