A 19th Century Hand Painted Mexican Retablo Dated 1884

The naïve, hand painted vignette depicts a woman praying to the images of Saint Anthony holding The Christ Child, together with The Holy Mother, all shown hovering above a group of three male figures, one holding the reins of a horse. The handwritten Spanish text shown in the bottom margin and dated 1884, translates roughly to offering thanks to Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mary, The Holy Mother) for having heard the prayers of the man’s wife (shown praying), whose husband miraculously recovered after having seriously injured his head when thrown by his horse. Oil on tin, dry mounted and set within a custom gallery frame. Dimensions, 10” high x 14” wide (sight), 18.5” high x 22” wide (framed).
