An Extremely Fine Pair of 19th Century Chinese Ivory Letter Holders, Shanghai or Canton
Both carved ivory panels sided by fruiting vines & dragons in high relief flanking four tiers of slotted compartments. All profusely decorated with extremely fine hand carved & pierced detail, depicting vignettes of nobles riding in carriages alongside attendants & musicians, all set against an incredibly complex & finely detailed field of carved & pierced geometric & foliate motifs. Areas of loss & repairs. Both panels measure 16” high x 6.25” wide.

(The incredibly high level of craftsmanship demonstrated in executing such an elevated & complicated degree of fineness of detail, strongly supports the belief that these examples were certainly not intended for the general public nor for the tourist trade, but were instead most likely commissioned by a person of wealth or of high social standing).
