Provenance: By descent through the family of Henry Franklin Bronson (1817-1889). H.F. Bronson was born in New York State and later moved to Ottawa in 1852. He became one of Canada’s great ‘Lumber Barons’ and was one of the first to ship timber to the United States market.

Duncan Phyfe (1768-1854) was a highly noted American cabinetmaker working in New York City during the early 19th century and is considered to be the most influential of all the New York cabinetmakers during that period. This table is unquestionably of the period and bears several features strongly associated with Phyfe’s workshop, often cited when forming attributions to his work. At the present there is little more evidence to further an attribution, as Phyfe very seldom signed or labeled his pieces, plus the fact that there were also a number of other highly skilled cabinetmakers such as John Hewitt, working in New York City at that time, turning out very high quality furniture of similar design. The matter of attribution aside, this is a superior Classical Period card table of very fine timber, exacting proportions and of exceptional graining & colour.
