A Rare Set of Six George II Hand-Coloured Botanical Studies taken from the Gardeners Dictionary, published by Philip Miller. Five of these fine copper engravings were executed by John Miller (1715-1790) after drawings by Richard Lancake and dated 1757, the sixth is both drawn & engraved by John Miller and dated 1758. Each plate measures approximately13" x 8 " and set within an acid-free mat and a giltwood frame. Note: The dating of these plates would indicate they are most likely from the 6th edition of the Gardeners Dictionary as they predate the 7th edition which was published in 1759.
Philip Miller (1691-1771) was the principal horticulturalist in England during the mid 18th century, and as a long time curator of the Chelsea Physic Garden and an active member of the Society of Gardeners, he had the opportunity to interact with some of the most important naturalists of his day as well as some of the most gifted botanical artists of the period.
The Society of Gardeners was a trade union formed in 1724 by prominent horticulturalists of the time to protect the interests of plant sellers. One of the projects undertaken by the group was to create an illustrated guide to plants currently being grown in Britain. Philip Miller was chosen to organize the undertaking of the Gardener's Dictionary which was first published in 1731, and amongst those artists whose illustrations he used for his publications were Georg Ehret, Robert Furber, John Miller and Richard Lancake.

A Very Fine Classical Period Mahogany Fold Over Card Table
Executed in the Manner of Duncan Phyfe. The hinged, double
elliptical-shaped top opening to a figured interior and
rotating over a conforming frieze decorated with lozenges
of curly maple and turned drops, raised atop a cluster of
four richly carved columnar supports affixed to a fluted
plinth base. Raised overall upon four splayed and
waterleaf-carved supports terminating to paw -shaped brass
toe-caps on castors. New York City, Circa 1815.
Dimensions: Height - 30” Width - 35.75” Depth - 18.5”
Provenance: By descent through the family of Henry
Franklin Bronson (1817-1889). H.F. Bronson was born in New
York State and later moved to Ottawa in 1852. He became
one of Canada’s great ‘Lumber Barons’ and was one of the
first to ship timber to the United States market.
Duncan
Phyfe (1768-1854) was a highly noted American cabinetmaker
working in New York City during the early 19th century and
is considered to be the most influential of all the New
York cabinetmakers during that period. This table is
unquestionably of the period and bears several features
strongly associated with Phyfe’s workshop, often cited
when forming attributions to his work. At the present
there is little more evidence to further an attribution,
as Phyfe very seldom signed or labeled his pieces, plus
the fact that there were also a number of other highly
skilled cabinetmakers such as John Hewitt, working in New
York City at that time, turning out very high quality
furniture of similar design. The matter of attribution
aside, this is a superior Classical Period card table of
very fine timber, exacting proportions and of exceptional
graining & colour.

‘Tiger’
John Trivett Nettleship (1841-1902) British.
Oil on canvas. Signed & dated 1893 bottom left.
Dimensions: 28.5” x 45.5”, set within its original giltwood
frame.
John Trivett Nettleship is recorded as having exhibited several
‘Big Game’ paintings at the Royal Academy in London from 1874
until 1901.
Provenance: From the Estate of Firasat Ali Khan
Firasat Ali Khan grew up in Rampar, India during the time of
British rule and was of ‘Pathan’ stock - part of the very
privileged ‘Zaminder’ land-owning aristocracy, often referred to
as a ‘king-making’ family. Mr. Ali Khan served as Captain in the
British army from 1940 to 1946, and in 1968 Mr. Khan met his
wife, who was then a Canadian diplomat posted to India, and
subsequently moved to Canada in 1970, bringing with him many of
his family’s possessions, including this painting by John
Trivett Nettleship.

A Very Fine and Important 19th Century
Fold Over Card Table in Cuban Mahogany.
The canted top of
richly figured radiating veneers opening to a conforming
panel above a cavetto moulded frieze, raised atop double
lyre-shaped supports strung with brass ‘strings’ rising

terminating to original paw-shaped brass toe-caps and
castors. Philadelphia, Circa 1825. Height: 29.5” Width:
35.5” Depth: 18” (36” open).
Note: the use of two open lyre
supports is somewhat unusual, as tables of this design
often incorporated a solid lyre-shaped panel in the back,
thereby making this is a relatively more elegant and
sophisticated example than most.
Provenance: Purchased
directly through descent from the family of Sir John
Thompson (1845-1892), Prime Minister of Canada 1892-94.
